Transcript lesson 1:
Around 9 out of 10 predators live and hunt alone. But some species have evolved to work together. Teaming up to take down prey(s) can bring bigger rewards, often with less effort and lower risk. Lions spend as much as 20 hours a day resting in preparation for the hunt. At the core of the pride is a sisterhood of related adult females. Cooperating more closely than any other cat(s) allows the females to take down a much bigger prey than a single lion could. Giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, even small elephants can be successfully targeted by this collected killing machine. A lioness spots a lone zebra. Trying to take him on her own is a risk, an adult stallion weights close to half a ton, and it’s born to run. The lion’s small heart and lung means she lacks the stamina for a long chase. Lions hunting alone have a success rate of less than 20%. But when the pride hunts together, it’s a very different story. The fastest member takes up the chase. They pushed their prey towards the biggest lioness, who’s in position to ambush the fleeing target. She cramps the zebras’ spine to sever it. Finally her sister catches up to help finish the job. Hunting together double the lions’ hit rate
